Timing chain tension checking

   Hi My 2001 (Y) 1.5 Almera has developed a misfire or something similar and the engine management light has come on. 
I have read several threads saying it is possibly the timing chain stretching causing the timing to go out slightly, the threads all say the first thing to do is to check the tension of the chain.
I am pretty good at DIY mechanics, is it possible for somebody to write an "HOW TO DO" thread so I can have a look myself before going to a garage to be told it could be this or that!!
