Almera SLX Hesitation and flat spot problem.

   We have a 1999 Almera SLX.
It has a full service history and only 34k on the clock ( genuine ).
Recently there is a real hesitation to the engine when cruising along at 50/60 mph, a real jerkiness to the drive, not consistently, just random but too often. Foot to the pedal and after 3/4 seconds speed picks up and it is OK.
Also at low speed, 20/35 mph when the pedal is pressed nothing happens~ the car dawdles along for 5/6/7/seconds then suddenly changes down a gear and picks up speed. The SLX is the auto box. 
I have changed the plugs and cleaned the MAF. Can't hear any whistles from rubber hose in the engine bay. No CEL showing, dash clear.
So….what next ? What should I be looking at to clean/replace/check !
