Engine warning light on

   Just bought a 53 plate primera est  and the engine warning light comes on, checked the handbook which states it indicates water in petrol filter, do I need to clean? if so how , where is it located.?
Car had been stood for a year unused so petrol would have released a lot of water while standing, would just filling tank with fresh petrol eventually clear the fault  [it did clear temp while motorway driving]  Only put a couple of gallons in so far.
