The owner of a derelict hotel in the heart of a Broads tourism hotspot has been given an ultimatum to put in a planning application by the end of the month.

The council’s cabinet member for localism Trevor Ivory said: “It’s a disgrace the saga has dragged on and the new Conservative administration in north Norfolk is determined to see progress made quickly.”

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb, who has received an enormous mailbag from local residents calling for action on the hotel and another untidy site in Station Road – the riverside rooms leased by the Orchid Group – welcomed the development.

He said: “This site is an immensely important gateway to the Broads and I would hope Mr Herbert feels a sense of civic responsibility in improving its appearance.”

Mr Herbert, both a Norfolk county and South Norfolk councillor, insists the hotel has ceased to be viable, but long negotiations with planning officers have so far failed to agree a replacement use. He has previously stated his refusal to spend money on the site until he gets planning permission, but was unavailable for comment when the EDP tried to contact him yesterday.

Mr Lamb said he was heartened by positive progress on the riverside rooms site, the Orchid Group’s property director Paul Kotrys agreeing to improvement work.

The company had also pledged to seek an occupier for the building, possibly some community use.

There can be few more depressing journeys a holidaymaker, or anyone else for that matter than from the free carpark to the centre of Wroxham, down Station Road. The whole road is a mess which can only harm tourism which is, like it or not, the biggest Industry in Norfolk.

The whole of Hoveton including the thin layer of oil that covered the river last Saturday is an absolute disgrace.

Why is no one moaning about the Kings Head in Hoveton also, the building next door to the Kings Head is a house and pubhotel and the building is in ruins, I approached the Kings Head to enquire about the property why it was in ruins, They laughed and said the property is owned by the Kings Head and the owners dont want anything to be done to the property as this would be competition for them,

WORDS FAIL ME!!!!!! so for years us locals have to put up with looking at a boarded up property, This boarded up building used to be the Best pub on the Broads in its heyday,

Hoveton and wroxham parish council should be ashamed, as they should be for letting Barnes Brinkcraft ruin the riverside outlook in wroxham from the river, wroxham is an awful place from the river now, strange when the thwaites the barnes brinkcraft owners step father is on the parish council.

It is about time something was done to improve the mess in Station Rd. it should have been done years ago. Just demolish it and build something that is a tourist attraction, Hoveton is a lovely village and it is this sort of thing that really puts people off.

The whole of Station road is a total mess, other than the northern end. Demolish the flaming lot, as no one should have to put up with seeing this as it's an absolute disgrace, tourist attraction I think not.

SF plane crash Safety changes saved lives

It wasn't just luck that saved all but two of the 307 passengers aboard Asiana Airlines Flight 214, aviation safety experts said Monday.

It also took Federal Aviation Administration mandates from the late 1980s that forced manufacturers to bolster seat strength to withstand traumatic force and to line cabins with fire-resistant materials to stall fires.

"If this had happened before then," said Michael Barr , a senior instructor at the Aviation Safety School at the University of Southern California , "the inside of that plane would have looked like a jigsaw puzzle dropped from a second-floor window."

Instead, photos released by the National Transportation Safety Board show that rows of seats inside the Boeing 777 remained mostly intact, which allowed passengers to unbuckle and flee toward emergency exits.

The fire that followed may have been delayed just long enough to give crew members and rescue workers time to evacuate those who were stuck, Barr said. Elder Scrolls Online gold

A few seconds count "A few seconds here and there adds up," he said. Elder Scrolls Online gold "It's the difference between saving lives."

Flight 214 clipped a seawall, skidded, briefly went airborne again and finally slammed to earth on its belly. The fact that most passengers survived may be due to a seat-strength upgrade that federal regulators required on new passenger planes starting in 1988, said Todd Curtis , an airline safety expert and creator of the website AirSafe.com.

Before then, seats were designed to absorb nine times the force of gravity, or 9 g's. But Curtis said crash investigations often revealed that passengers could have survived the impact if their seats had not uprooted and launched them into cabin walls.

Sometimes those seats blocked escape routes for surviving passengers, who then died as fire engulfed the plane.

Now, all passenger airlines are required to install seats that can absorb 16 g's.

Curtis said the crash of Flight 214 appears to have borne out the value of the strengthened seats.

"You see the cabin floor buckled, but the seats did not come unglued," he said. "It prevented more people from being killed or injured. If those seats come undone, it's just chaos in there."

About 30 years ago, regulators started requiring airlines to outfit planes with fire-resistant materials, which increases available evacuation time, Curtis said. Even blankets and pillowcases must be made of special material.

Better training Curtis also pointed to improved airline training that emphasizes clearing a crashed plane within 90 seconds. Crews are run through a variety of scenarios, including some in which multiple escape routes are blocked.

Federal investigators said Monday that two of the inflatable slides on Flight 214 deployed inside the aircraft. Crew members had to take axes to at least one to free a trapped colleague.

Photos showed a detached engine blocked at least one of the remaining exits. eso gold

"It looks like they only had one-fourth of their emergency exits to work with," Curtis said, "and they still managed to get everyone off."

Another safety expert said the crew's actions, firefighters' rapid response and the lack of panic among Flight 214's passengers were also factors in the minimal loss of life.

"When the plane lands and the tail pops off, there's not a lot a manufacturer can do to prepare for that scenario," said John Silcott , an airline pilot and executive vice president of Expert Aviation Consulting in Indianapolis. "At that point, there's nothing a pilot or anyone can do. It's not like you could design and push a button and make it stop."

It is understood Townsend has not been accused of betting on any matches he played in.

Therefore it is not a match-fixing case, but the FA is taking the alleged breach seriously and has invited Townsend to respond. The FA said in a statement: "The FA has announced it has charged Andros Townsend in relation to alleged breaches of its rules governing misconduct and betting."

It added: "The Tottenham Hotspur player has been charged with breaches of Rule E8 (b) in relation to a number of betting offences. The player has until 3 June to respond to the charges. Elder Scrolls Online gold "

The specific rule he is alleged to have broken specifies that players must not bet "either directly or indirectly, or instruct, permit, cause or enable any person to bet on" any "result, progress or conduct of a match or competition" in which they participate or have participated in during a season, or in which they have any influence.

For example, a player who appears in the first round of the FA Cup would not be permitted to wager on the outcome of the final.

The rule also forbids players gambling on any other matter involving a competition in which have have participated in during a season - "including, for example and without limitation, the transfer of players, employment of managers, team selection or disciplinary matters". eso gold

Players, and all club employees, are deemed by the FA rules to participate in matches involving a club while they are employed by that club, whether they take to the field or not.

The FA, which has given no details of the exact breach in this case, added: "Townsend will receive the full support of the FA and Tottenham Hotspur FC in seeking rehabilitation whilst responding to the allegations."

Townsend is a product of the Tottenham academy who has had loan spells with a host of clubs, including Ipswich , Millwall , Leeds and Birmingham, while attempting to make his mark at White Hart Lane. His representatives declined to comment on the FA charges.
