engine noise

   Hello, I have a 2001 Nissan Patrol 3.0 D. It runs smoothly but when accelerating, there is a whinning noise from the engine, as I accelarate. It doesn't make the noise when just travelling on the flat. The noise happens more often when towing my caravan. Can anyone what this might be please?
