I have had my box repaired recently. The car is a Primera 2ltr auto with hcvt. The guy said he has filled it with Texaco dexron3 atf. Nissan recommend using only their own cvt fluid - NS1, but they would, wouldn't they? Had a route around online, and the only other company that says their fluid is compatible is Eneos...CVT FLUID. I've driven about 200 miles since it was fixed and the box is as smooth as ever. Anyone got any thoughts? 8-) ------------- Joe Harris 07786548227 |

if it aint broke, dont fix it. i had a similar querey with a previa auto, it states use Type T-IV fluide but when i changed it, i put in Dex3 by mistak. I was told the only difference is the life of the fluid. ------------- Kevin Shek http://www.custom-fit.co.uk">

To be honest, knowing how fragile these gearboxes are (i have a broken one sat on my drive) i would be tempted to use the recommended fluid. I know it is expensive but i would not be leaving dextron in it. Mick -------------

i can do the ATF for £2.35 INC vat per 1L bottle and thats genuine nissan stuff. -------------

thats the wrong stuff aint it? its not the ATF you want, NS-1 book price is like £10 a litre. They will discount you it tho, I paid £25 for 5 litres last time. So what went wrong with yours? I'm starting to think these cvt boxes are a bit delicate. I had a Bluebird prior to this car. Never had a problem with the box, just changed the ATF every year. It'd done just less than 150,000 when I got rid of it. ------------- Joe Harris 07786548227 |

theres a well known autobox specialist in the NE called Austrin Engineering, i spoke o the boss there. He took my car out for a drive, told me not to worry about the fluid, and diagnosed the problem at the time as one of the load sensors, ie MAF, air temp etc......... in the end, it turned out to be the poxy £13 coolant temp sensor. Kev, you are probably right. The guy The Automatic Gearbox Company up here in Manchester said more or less the same thing. Still running fine on dexron3 nearly 600 miles later. 8-) ------------- Joe Harris 07786548227 |

i think the way he put it to me was that the grade i was looking for is fully sythetic and lasts longer, or something like that. Only problem is, if you want to change the dex3 out now, you need the full sump removed, filter changed, and the convertor bled. I found this out after i had spent more money buying the correct fluid (which i paid £28 for and never used, still sitting in garage) cos when you drain the box, the convertor doesnt empty. As that holds mot of the fluid, you would only be changing the bit of fluid in the sump/reservoir, then ultimately, it would mix with the stuff in the convertor. ------------- Kevin Shek http://www.custom-fit.co.uk">

Kev, I know. I've changed the fluid in it before...about a gallon comes out. the rest of the 14.odd litres that the system holds must be in the torque converter. What happens if NS-1 and Dex3 mix though? ------------- Joe Harris 07786548227 |
