As soon as the colder weather struck, my Almera (1.5L, 53 plate) refused to fire up. The engine would turn, and would almost start, but never quite get there.  I found that there was a spark on all 4 plugs, and that petrol was getting through. Eventually I checked the engine coolant temperature sensor (has 2 wires), which is located on front of engine block just above the alternator. It was showing zero electrical resistance (shorting) on a multimeter. I changed this (£12 something), and that solved the problem. The mpg improved too, so I guess this component had been faulty for sometime. The cold resistance should be about 3Kohms, and as the engine heats up, this drops to about 300ohms. As the electrical resistance decreases (engine heats up) this signals to the EMS to retard the ignition timing.
